Stand-Alone Personal Finance Standards

The Financial Education K–12 Learning Standards were developed to establish, promote, and support financially informed choices and effective behavior for students in all grade levels— from kindergarten through 12th grade. They are based on two sets of national standards: Jump$tart National Standards in K–12 Personal Finance Education and Council for Economic Education National Standards for Financial Literacy. Standards are aligned for grades K-5, 6-8, and 9-12.

Personal Finance Standards in Career and Technical Education (CTE), Family and Consumer Sciences

Yes

Family and Consumer Sciences offers a course with personal financial literacy standards embedded within the coursework. It is “Family and Consumer Sciences-Comprehensive”. There is an FCS that is stand-alone entitled Consumer Economics and Personal Finance. Business and Marketing offers courses with personal finance embedded within the curriculum. The courses are entitled “Recordkeeping”, “Entrepreneurship”, “Banking and Finance”.

Personal Finance Embedded in Social Studies or Economics Standards

No

The economics standards are not embedded with the personal financial literacy standards. The state requires that if a stand-alone personal financial literacy course is not offered the school district must embed the financial literacy standards within a course currently offered. They suggested social studies, math or family and consumer sciences.

While there is not a course that specifically embeds standards, instructors can embed the financial literacy standards if needed to meet state requirements.

Teachers of 6–12 students may be required to incorporate the standards, depending on the courses they are teaching. If personal finance is part of the course curriculum, teachers must use the Washington State Financial Education K–12 Learning Standards. All 9–12 high school students must be given access to the financial education standards. If districts opt to teach personal finance, the Financial Education K–12 Learning Standards must be used.
