The State Board of Education approved Ohio’s Learning Standards for Financial Literacy for grades K-12 in February 2018, per Ohio law. The standards give students, beginning in kindergarten, a fundamental understanding of financial literacy concepts.

Personal Finance Standards in Career and Technical Education (CTE), Family and Consumer Sciences

Both middle and high school Family and Consumer Sciences courses have standards embedded. In middle school students can take an Introduction to Family and Consumer Sciences course. In high school, students have several options including Intro to FCS, Graduation Reality and Dual-Role Skills, and Personal Financial Management.

There is a specific stand-alone course within the high school social studies curriculum entitled Economics and Financial Literacy. This course explores the fundamentals that guide individuals and nations as they make choices about how to use limited resources to satisfy their wants. More specifically, it examines the ability of individuals to use knowledge and skills to manage limited financial resources effectively for a lifetime of financial security.
