North Dakota does not have stand-alone personal finance standards. They have specific concepts that students are required to receive via the social curriculum. Each district is responsible for ensuring that their students receive instruction on the concepts of personal finance, including: checkbook mechanics including writing checks, balancing, and statement reconciliation; saving for larger purchases; credit including credit card usage, interest, and fees; earning power including jobs for teenagers; taxation and paycheck withholdings; college costs; making and living within a budget; and mortgages, retirement savings, and investments.

Personal Finance Standards in Career and Technical Education (CTE), Family and Consumer Sciences

Yes

Family and Consumer Sciences offers a course entitled Consumer and Resource Management that includes personal financial literacy standards. Family and Consumer Sciences I, II, and III may also embed personal finance into the curriculum as well.

Personal Finance Embedded in Social Studies or Economics Standards

Yes

Standards are embedded in the social studies curriculum. The two specific courses are Consumer Education and Economics. If the state mandated Personal Finance concepts are not offered to all students in another course, then these concepts must be included in the Problems of Democracy curriculum.

Personal Finance or Financial Literacy Course Required for Graduation or Required to be Offered

Consumer Mathematics is offered to grades 9-12 as a .5 or 1 credit option for a math credit. Consumer Math reinforces general math topics (such as arithmetic using rational numbers, measurement, ratio and proportion, and basic statistics) and applies these skills to consumer problems and situations.
