State-by-State Assessment of Personal Finance Education Standards

Stand-Alone Personal Finance Standards

Yes

The State Board of Education is working on reviewing standards to create a full-credit course entitled Economics and Personal Finance that will be offered to students in grades 9-12. This will be a required course. The state is using standards from the Voluntary National Content Standards in Economics and the 2013 National Standards for Financial Literacy, as developed by the Council for Economic Education.

Personal Finance Standards in Career and Technical Education (CTE), Family and Consumer Sciences

Yes

There is a course in Family and Consumer Sciences entitled Exploring Personal Finance and Hospitality. Business Education also has several courses related to personal finance. There are also honors personal finance courses as well.

Personal Finance Embedded in Social Studies or Economics Standards

Yes

There will be a stand-alone course entitled Economics and Personal Finance. Standards are still under review.

In July 2019, House Bill 924 was passed mandating a course in Economics and Personal Finance (EPF) be developed.  The legislation mandates the course be a graduation requirement for all students graduating from a North Carolina public high school and charges the North Carolina State Board of Education to require the course be a full credit.
