Stand-Alone Personal Finance Standards | Yes Districts are required to offer financial literacy as an elective course. There are three different curriculum areas it can be offered under: family and consumer sciences, social studies, and Business. It can also be offered as a mathematics credit if taught by a certified math teacher. |
Personal Finance Standards in Career and Technical Education (CTE), Family and Consumer Sciences | Yes There is a stand-alone course in both Family and Consumer Sciences and Business. New Mexico’s CareerTech standards have financial literacy embedded within the Career Pathways of Business, Career-Ready Practices, and Finance. |
Personal Finance Embedded in Social Studies or Economics Standards | Yes There is a stand-alone financial literacy course in the social studies curriculum for 9-12 grade students. If students take this course and it is taught by a certified, social studies instructor they will receive a social studies credit. |
Personal Finance or Financial Literacy Course Required for Graduation or Required to be Offered | Yes There is a specific personal finance course in the mathematics curriculum. The course must be taught by a certified mathematics instructor to qualify as a math credit. |
